5 team-building games your employees will actually enjoy

If your repertoire of team building activities is usually met with sighs and eye-rolls, it’s time to mix it up and find some games that your team will actually enjoy playing.

Team building exercises are a great idea in theory, but if no one’s heart is in it then you’re unlikely to get much out of them.  Get your employees enthused over a task or game though and you’ll reap the rewards as they learn to communicate and work together in an environment that encourages new and positive interactions.

5 simple team building activities

We’ve done the research to find 5 simple team building activities that we think your employees will enjoy taking part in.

1. Scavenger hunt

The scavenger hunt is an old classic game that everyone loves to play.  Dependent on how long you want the activity to last, you can make it as simple or as difficult as you like.

How to play:

Employees should be split into two or more teams to compete against each other to collect as many items, or complete as many of the tasks on a list as possible.  It could be as simple as finding objects in the workplace, or as difficult as finding items or completing tasks in public and providing photographic evidence.

If you want to make an afternoon of it, you could even devise clues for the teams to puzzle out together to lead them to each object.

Skills required: teamwork, problem solving, communication

2. Sneak a peek

Sneak a peek is a fun game that requires children’s building blocks (like Lego or Duplo) to play.

How to play:

In this game, a small sculpture is made by the instructor from children’s building blocks and placed in the middle of the room at an equal distance from all teams participating.  Players then work in their teams to recreate the sculpture from memory by sending one person up at a time to ‘sneak a peek’ at the sculpture for 10 seconds. After looking at the sculpture, the player returns to their team and has 25 seconds to try to explain how to recreate the sculpture. A further minute is then allowed for building, before the next team member is sent up for a peek.  This continues until one of the teams has successfully recreated the original sculpture.

Skills required: memory and communication

3. Salt and pepper

This simple game requires quick thinking and works well as an icebreaker when there are ten or more people playing.

How to play:

Before playing, the instructor should think of things that come in pairs, like salt and pepper, tea and coffee, bucket and spade, etc.  Each item should be written on a piece of paper, and each piece of paper should be stuck on a player’s back.

Players then walk around the room asking each other yes or no questions to first discover what the word stuck to their back is, and then to find their pair.

Skills required: problem solving and communication

4. The tallest tower

This fun team game will test player’s resourcefulness!

How to play:

To prepare for the game, you will need to gather ‘building materials’ for each team.  This could include items like straws, paper, plastic cups, safety pins, string, etc.

Teams must them compete against each other to see who can build the tallest standalone structure using the materials given to them.

Skills required: creativity, resourcefulness, teamwork, problem solving

Taking regular time out of day to day tasks to play team building exercises helps to reduce monotony, improve employee relations, performance and morale.  Choose games or activities that suit your employee’s personalities and roles and you’ll find everyone gets more back from the exercise.

5. Bank robbery

Team members must work together to piece together clues and discover who robbed the bank.  Clues can be devised by the instructor or downloaded from the internet.

How to play:

Each team member receives one or more clue, players then take it in turns to read aloud their clues to the rest of their team.  All clues are discussed, and information is pieced together to discover what happened and who performed the robbery.
